Vancouver, Washington, just across the Columbia River (Oregon and Washington's border), has been a long standing "bedroom community" for the City of Portland. Reports have suggested that almost 40 percent of Vancouver's working population work in Portland. With real estate values slightly less than the Portland metropolitan area, lower property taxes, the advantage of buying goods across the Oregon border without paying sales tax, and an increase in new construction, Vancouver has become, to many, the place to be. In previous years, Oregonians were selling their homes and moving to close in Washington communities for the small town atmosphere with the big city benefits just across the river. Twice awarded the prestigious designation of the "All American City", Vancouver, with over 60 neighborhoods and an array of both older established neighborhoods, Columbia River waterfront developments, and new subdivisions with state of the art schools, has become a popular choice as a potential destination for the budget conscious buyer. Visit the City of Vancouver's website for more information.
To the east of Vancouver lies the old mill town of Camas. Camas dates back to 1883 when the surplus of Douglas Fir trees dictated the need for a mill that was later built on the banks of the Columbia River. Over the years, the growth of the Portland/Vancouver area pushed development to this quiet mill town, now with over 20 neighborhood associations challenged with conserving the character of Camas while adjusting to the rapid growth. As a result, one will see a blend of old nostalgia along side high tech, newer developments.

At the edge of Clark County, just east of Camas is the growing town of Washougal. Gateway to the Columbia Gorge! Close to many recreational opportunities in the gorge – fishing, hiking, wind surfing and more. It is home to descendants of pioneers and sea captains, and exemplifies the contrast between history and the new growth seen all over Clark County. Even with several new neighborhoods it still maintains a small town feel. Visit the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce for more information.
